Leaders record comfortable wins in Cyprus championship

The sixth team, Anorthosis, beat Doxa 2-1 on Monday night, with the win taking them back to the top of the standings, level on points with APOEL and AEK.A much improved APOEL had few problems in overcoming Aris 4-0. The defending champions looked sharper and could have scored plenty more goals had it not been for Aris’ young keeper Loizou.Cavenaghi opened the scoring from the penalty spot midway through the first half while a Borg own-goal doubled the advantage before the break. Argentinian de Vincenti wrapped up the scoring with a brace.Apollon made light work of their game against Ethnikos and this despite falling behind in the 16th minute.In a 15-minute first-half spell, Apollon struck four times, with Elizio starting the comeback on the half-hour mark and Guie, Meska and Papoulis finishing it up before the break.Both sides scored a goal apiece after the break with Apollon winning comfortably by 5-2.AEK continued their impressive form defeating Paralimni 2-1.The Larnaca team took the lead in the 1st minute through Englezou and never looked like surrendering it. Marciniak added a second after the interval and even though Paralimni scored late on in the game AEK held on with ease to secure the three points.Nea Salamina came back from behind to defeat Ermis at the Ammochostos stadium.Keita had given Ermis the lead early on in the game but two second-half goals by Curcjric and Makriev propelled the Famagustans into fifth place. Omonia returned to winning ways as they defeated Ayia Napa with Badibanga getting both their goals.Ayia Napa hit back through Maatsen but it was all too little too late.In the final game of the weekend Paphos FC and AEL played out a dire 0-0 draw.last_img
