5 Sporting Things: Talking girls wrestling, boys wrestling, SCBL Tournament, Chaparral Tournament and latest b-ball rankings

first_imgby Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Five sporting things going around in Sumner County today…1. Wellington girls wrestlingIt was more than 40 years ago that girls basketball was making its entrance onto the high school sports scene. Now in 2020, girls wrestling is getting a similar start. For the first time, girls wrestling is an official Kansas State High School Activities Association sport.Anna Cullens wins at 109 pounds at the Wichita North tournament. Kaitlyn Hain wins at 130 pounds at Wichita North Tournament. Two Wellington girls and possibly a third will be attending the Class 4A Regional in McPherson on Feb. 14-15. The Class 4A state girls wrestling tournament is slated for Thursday, Feb. 27 at the Salina Event Center, one day before the Class 4A boys state meet the next day. The sport has suddenly exploded with as many as 900 potential girl wrestlers starting post-season competition!Wellington has two high school girls wrestlers at the moment and they are doing exceptionally well. Last week, Wellington was 2-for-2 in first-place medals at the girls-only Wichita North’s Redskin Invitational this weekend. At 109 pounds, Anna Cullens went 5-0 finishing first place. Cullen, who has wrestled in many boys matches this season, is currently 9-0 against other girls. She most certainly will be an athlete to watch as time moves forward. At Wichita North, Cullens defeated girls from Wichita North, Newton, Wichita Heights, Hesston, and a second girl from Wichita North. At 130 pounds, Kaitlyn Hain is 12-1 on the season and also finished first at the Redskin Invitational. She went 5-0 defeating girls from Liberal, Valley Center, Wichita Southeast and Wichita North to capture the crown.2. Wellington boys wrestling Meanwhile, the Crusader wrestling team is back on the mat after an extended Christmas break. However, Wellington almost didn’t have a wrestling tournament last weekend when Rossville canceled its Friday dual and Saturday tournament because of weather concerns.Kanden Young. Thanks to the scrambling of Wellington activities director Luke Smith, the Crusaders wrestlers were able to get on the mat Saturday as a late entry into the Augusta Tournament. It proved to be a tough one for the Dukes — with the exception of the dynamic duo of Kanden Young and Kenny Fehrman — who are still undefeated and undeterred. The two are now a combined 19-0 this season.Young went 4-0 at 195 pounds while Fehrman was 5-0 at 220 to capture first place in Augusta. As far as the other wrestlers, it was slim pickings for the Crusader grapplers with just two wins among the six others.Hunter Norris at 113 pounds went 0-5, Nick Norris at 120 went 1-4, Chase Koehler at 132 went 0-5, Colin Green at 145 went 0-1, Jakob Lira at 152 went 1-3, and Luke McComb at heavyweight at 0-3.Wellington will travel to Halstead for a two-day tournament this Friday and Saturday.3. Midseason basketball tournamentsThe midseason basketball tournaments are just a week away for the South-Central Border League and the Chaparral Roadrunner Classic.Let’s tackle the SCBL Tournament first which will begin Saturday with play-in games before playing the first round at home sites on Monday and Tuesday. Official brackets won’t come out until later this week. This should be an interesting tournament, especially on the boys’ side. Caldwell, Udall and Cedar Vale-Dexter are all sitting at 6-1 overall with Sedan at 4-3. It is hard to figure since the regular season SCBL play is just getting started and few of these teams have seen one another. West Elk appears to be the clear favorite for the girls, but South Haven and Argonia are doing pretty well. Here are the standings going into tonight’s games. South Haven6200 Sedan4300 4.
