first_img Share Shane Waller (photo courtesy of Ron Besser) Argos Fall to Delta State in Series Finale, 7-3center_img CLEVELAND, Miss. –  The West Florida baseball team could not complete their three game sweep over No. 10 Delta State as the Statesmen collected the 7-3 win to salvage game three in the weekend series. Statesmen starter Cody Kelley held West Florida to three runs on just five hits in a complete game performance.The Statesmen jumped out to early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off Argos starter Daniel Vargas-Vila. Billy Ray Todd led off the inning with a double to right before the Statesmen used RBI singles from Michael Nieman and Josh Gordon to score two runs.Vargas-Vila held the Statesmen scoreless for the next three innings until the fifth when they tacked on a run off an RBI from Cade Hoggard. The Argos answered right back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning on RBI singles from Jack Materne and Zach Taylor.With one out in the seventh, Vargas-Vila allowed a single, a hit batter and a walk to load the bases. Statesmen shortstop Chris Escobar then connected on a 1-0 pitch for a grand slam over the right field wall, giving them a 7-2 advantage.West Florida added a run in the ninth but was shut down offensively as the Statesmen starter Cody Kelley finished off the game.Vargas-Vila took the loss in the contest to fall to 2-2 on the season, working 5.1 innings while allowing seven earned runs on 10 hits. Shane Waller worked 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, giving up just four hits.The Argos will be back in action this week against NCAA Division I opponent Mississippi Valley State.
