Man charged in kidnapping of visiting Chinese scholar

first_img Related iStock/Thinkstock(CHAMPAIGN, Ill.) — An Illinois man was arrested and charged Friday with kidnapping a visiting scholar from China, who authorities now believe to be dead after she disappeared three weeks ago.Brendt Christensen, 28, of Champaign, Illinois, has been charged in a federal criminal complaint with abducting Yingying Zhang, who vanished shortly after she stepped off a transit bus near the University of Illinois campus in July. The complaint, which was filed in federal court on Friday, alleges that Christensen’s cellphone was used in April to visit an online forum entitled “Abduction 101,” including sub-threads called “Perfect Abduction Fantasy” and “Planning a Kidnapping.”Zhang, the 26-year-old daughter of a working-class factory driver from China, was reported missing by a University of Illinois associate professor on June 9, just weeks after she arrived on the Urbana-Champaign campus as an international scholar researching photosynthesis and crop productivity.According to a 10-page affidavit filed by FBI Special Agent Anthony Manganaro, Christensen was caught on an audio recording while under law enforcement surveillance on Thursday explaining how he kidnapped Zhang. Christensen allegedly stated that he brought Zhang back to his apartment and held her there against her will.Based on that information and other facts uncovered during the investigation, authorities believe Zhang is no longer alive, the affidavit states.Robert Jones, chancellor of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, issued a statement expressing “great sorrow” to learn that Zhang is believed to be dead.“There are no words that can explain why or how such a terrible thing should happen, nor is there anything I might say that will ease the grief of any of you who knew her. There will be time for justice and for explanations in the days and weeks ahead,” Jones said. “Yingying is remembered for her kindness, her gentleness and her smile.”According to the federal charging document, Zhang intended to meet with an apartment manager to sign a lease at a complex in Urbana the afternoon of June 9. Surveillance cameras captured Zhang waiting at a bus stop near the university’s campus at 2 p.m. CT when a black Saturn Astra appeared to pass her, then circle the block back to her location. The car pulled over to where Zhang was standing, and she was observed on surveillance video speaking with the driver for about a minute. She then entered the front passenger side of the vehicle and the car drove off, according to the affidavit.Law enforcement personnel investigating Zhang’s disappearance determined there were 18 cars similar to the one Zhang was seen getting into registered in Champaign County. While following up on leads, authorities went to an apartment complex in Champaign on June 12 where they spotted a 2008 black Saturn Astra, which was registered under Christensen’s name. Investigators questioned Christensen, who stated the vehicle was his but couldn’t initially recall his whereabouts on the day Zhang went missing, according to the affidavit.Authorities later determined the black Saturn Astra in the surveillance footage had a sunroof and cracked hubcap, like the vehicle that belongs to Christensen. When they interviewed Christensen again, he admitted to driving around the University of Illinois campus and giving a ride to an Asian woman who told him she was late for an appointment, according the court document.Christensen claimed the woman “panicked” when he apparently made a wrong turn, so he let her out of his car in a residential area a few blocks away from where he picked her up, the affidavit states.Christensen was placed under continuous law enforcement surveillance on June 16.The affidavit says investigators obtained consent from Christensen’s roommate to search the residence, where they seized numerous electronics, including several computers and cellphones belonging to the suspect. They also executed a search warrant on Christensen’s car.The front passenger door of the vehicle where Zhang would have been sitting appeared to have been cleaned more diligently than the other car doors, the affidavit states.“Based on my training and experience, I believe that this type of action may be indicative of an attempt to conceal or destroy evidence,” Manganaro said.Although Zhang is no longer believed to be alive, the affidavit states that she remains missing as of Friday.Copyright © 2017, ABC Radio. Indigenous-made film explores traditional textile making in the Ecuadorian Amazon

first_imgArticle published by Genevieve Belmaker Arts, Climate Activism, Documentary, Film, Traditional Knowledge Yanda Montahuano, a filmmaker from the Sápara indigenous people in Ecuador’s Amazon region, has just released a short documentary film to share how his culture makes clothes from a tree-based fabric. The Sápara people are fighting to keep oil drilling out of their territory. With the film, Manthanhuano hopes to preserve and return millenary cultural knowledge for the younger generations and demonstrate to the world that the Sápara indigenous people remain alive in the Amazon rainforest. Before clothes from the outside world arrived, the Sápara people of the Ecuadoran Amazon made their own clothes from tree bark harvested in the rainforest. Today, the Sápara are in danger of losing this millenary cultural knowledge as commercial clothing and extractive oil projects threaten their traditional way of life.Enter filmmaker Lenin “Yanda” Montahuano, 28, who produced a short documentary, Sápara Clothing: A Tradition in Danger, in an attempt to restore Sápara cultural knowledge for younger generations and show the world that the Sápara indigenous people’s culture remains alive in the Amazon rainforest.“We wanted to produce this because very few people know about this,” Montahuano said. “As a young Sápara, I wanted to nourish myself from the knowledge of my elders, my grandparents. We don’t want these traditions to be lost.”The film was produced with fellow filmmaker Samantha Castro, who lives in Quito, Ecuador, and was commissioned by If Not Us Then Who?, a U.S.-based nonprofit that aims to highlight the roles that indigenous and local peoples play as stewards of the environment.*In the film, Montahuano’s uncle Arturo Santi shares the story of how the Sápara people learned to produce clothing from the bark of the llanchama tree that “grows in the heart of the forest.”“There used to be no clothing, so long ago our grandparents taught this to us,” Santo says in the film. “During this time thousands of years ago, [the ancestors] learned how to make dresses, bedding, shirts, and chalinas used to carry the babies from the bark of the llanchama.”Stripped and beaten to soften the fibers, the llanchama bark can be transformed into a resistant textile fabric. The process can take up to a week for a person working alone, but with seven people collaborating, as shown in the film, it lasts three to four days. The first day consists of traveling into the forest to find the tree, cut it down and strip off a sheet of bark, Montahuano said. The sheet is then steeped in a stream overnight, and the next day it’s beaten with wooden mallets while it soaks until it softens into a wearable fabric. Finally, the newly created fabric is left in the sun to dry. Once dry, the fabric can be cut as needed for clothing or other needs.A Sápara man in the Ecuadorian Amazon pounds the fibers of the llanchama into a textile. Photo by Yanda MontahuanoMontahuano said there were two kinds of trees used for producing textiles: one red and one white. The red llanchama is the more commonly used tree that is shown in the film because it can be cut at any time. The white llanchama is used for more special occasions because it can only be cut during the full moon cycle.“Most of the time, the white llanchama is too hard to cut and produces a sap that irritates the skin,” Montahuano said. “But in connection with the cycles of the moon, the tree becomes softer and easier to cut.”On these occasions, the white llanchama tree is cut on the day of the full moon. Montahuano described the fabric produced from the white tree as “thinner, softer [with] a desirable color.”As part of their fight for cultural survival, the Sápara people are struggling to keep government-backed oil drilling out of their territory. In 2017, Montahuano participated in a march to the country’s capital, Quito, to demand government respect for indigenous autonomy and to protest the expansion of oil drilling in their territory.“We are under constant threat from the oil companies. They have divided us, even caused us death,” he said. “It has broken our intimate connection with nature, generating a great deal [of] sadness.”A very wet Colombian red howler (Alouatta seniculus) enjoys a banana near the Jandiayaku community. Photo by Yanda MontahuanoMontahuano showed the film at a Sápara assembly, and said he would like to produce a film that tells the entire history of the Sápara, filmed in each of the 25 communities that comprise the indigenous nation, and that protects its threatened language.“Next, we would like to produce a film from the perspective of the territory that tells the struggle, the dream and the existence of the Sápara people,” Montahuano said.In 2001, UNESCO recognized the oral and cultural traditions of the Sápara people as “Intangible Heritage of Humanity.” It noted that the Sápara had developed in what is one of the most biodiverse areas in the world and had cultivated a culture rich in its understanding of the natural environment.“The autonomous Sápara, by actively preserving their culture, as a way of life, are a glimmer of hope, not only for their continuation as a people, but also that they will continue protecting their part of the rainforest,” UNESCO said in a report.Banner image caption: Sápara people in the Ecuadorian Amazon prepare the llanchama tree to be made into fabric for clothing. Good effort trying to be objective in this article. I would like to give a constructive feedback which could help in clearing things up.1. It is mentioned that planting trees in village common lands will have negative affects socially and ecologically. There is no need to even have to agree or disagree with it, because, you also mentioned the fact that Cauvery Calling aims to plant trees only in the private lands of the farmers. So, plantation in the common lands doesn’t come into the picture.2.I don’t see that the ecologists are totally against this project, but just they they have some concerns, mainly in terms of what species of trees will be planted. And because there was no direct communication between the ecologists and Isha Foundation, it was not possible for them to address the concerns. As you seem to have spoken with an Isha spokesperson, if you could connect the concerned parties, it would be great, because I see that the ecologists are genuinely interested in making sure things are done the right way.May we all come together and make things happen.Rare Amazon bush dogs caught on camera in BoliviaCarrot1 Feba very good iniciative to be fallowed by the ranchers all overSponsoredlast_img read more

SA’s stock exchange lists

first_img6 June 2006South Africa’s only stock exchange, the JSE Ltd, listed on its own exchange on Monday morning. In a momentous occasion in the history of the exchange, guests were joined by Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, and wore a variety of hats in memory of the closing day of the old trading floor nearly 10 years ago to the day.By 10.30am the JSE had traded in the same region of trades seen in heavyweight companies BHP Billiton and First Rand. The JSE now joins an elite number of international bourses – including the London and New York stock exchanges, Deutsche Borse, Nasdaq, Euronext, the Australian Stock Exchange, the Singapore Exchange and the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing – that have listed on their own markets. For investors in South Africa and abroad, the move brings heightened transparency and visibility to the trading of JSE shares, which in turn has the potential to improve their liquidity and tradeability. The appearance of the JSE Ltd on the main board will allow international and local investors – including institutional and retail investors – the opportunity to compare the JSE as a listed company against its other listed peers. For brokers, many of whom have been members of the JSE for decades, the listing brings yet another counter onto their books to trade.“For the JSE, the listing brings with it an opportunity to both showcase itself to investors as a well-governed company as well as the opportunity to broaden our shareholder base through a broad-based black economic empowerment initiative that was integral to the listing,” said Russell Loubser, CEO of the newly listed exchange. The broad-based BEE initiative consists of two parts: a Black Shareholder Retention Scheme aimed at retaining existing black shareholders, and a JSE Empowerment Fund aimed at funding education for black people wanting to work in the financial services industry. The initiatives will raise the JSE’s direct black shareholding to over 10%.“This listing firmly entrenches the JSE’s commitment to transformation and allows us to lead by example in every aspect of corporate life, including black economic empowerment, as a critical consideration in the social landscape of South Africa today,” said JSE chairman Humphrey Borkum.“It has taken 10 years of hard work to get the JSE to a stage where it can proudly stand up and be counted amongst its peers as a listed company,” said Loubser. “But if you had to ask any of my team, they’d tell you without hesitation that it’s been worth the wait.”As a listed company, the JSE counter appears in the general financial-investment services sector under the alpha code reporter Want to use this article in your publication or on your website?See: Using SAinfo materiallast_img read more
