Writer’s Block: Precision Pelican

Moments of quietude where my attention was diverted from the hustle and bustle of the daily grind and redirected towards the goings on…October 12, 2018In “Editor’s Column” Share By DINA ARÉVALOPort Isabel-South Padre [email protected] week, I wrote about the aerobatic accomplishments of a certain turkey vulture that I saw swooping low over the ground in its quest for tasty tidbits of the less-than-living variety. But, what I didn’t get to mention is that that turkey vulture wasn’t the only avian acrobat I saw that day.Later on that drive, as I really got into the thick of town, I saw another airborne creature navigating the obstacles up high as I made my way through the tangle of vehicles and traffic lights below. It was one of our native brown pelicans — that beloved big-billed bird that went from the brink of extinction (locally, anyway), to becoming one of the most iconic — and prolific — sights along the Laguna Madre. The local topography around Port Isabel and South Padre Island can be somewhat deceptive when it comes to observing the flight of pelicans. They tend to like flying close to things — close to the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway, close to the crashing waves just off the beach, close to the calm waters of the bay. When you see them flying close to these landmarks, it’s usually from a similar perspective. Birds flying out over the sandbars are seen from the vantage point of the sand. Pelicans seen skimming just above the water’s surface on the bay are similarly seen from shore, or perhaps a bay boat. A pod gliding near the railing on the Causeway is seen from the inside of a car that is driving along the bridge. In each of these sightings, it appears as if the pelican is a rather terrestrial bird. It flies low, close to people and the places we inhabit. And it kind of makes sense when you consider how clumsy their flight can seem. Takeoffs are slow and laborious. There’s lots of flapping of wings for the short amount of altitude gained as a result. Like the raptor of last week’s column, pelicans are more adept at soaring on wind currents than they are at slicing through the air with any sort of finesse — unless, of course, they’re tucking in their wings for a laser-accurate dart into the water to catch some fish. But, that doesn’t mean they’re without aerial skill. Those pelicans flying alongside the Causeway, for instance, are soaring some 80-90 feet above the water. That’s about the height of a 7-story building! And there’s another local spot where pelicans can sometimes be seen, where their languid flight looks deceptively simple. Along Queen Isabella Boulevard in Port Isabel, right around the spot where a bait shop sits on one corner, and a restaurant sits on another, a channel cuts through the heart of the city.Pelicans like to hang out in the water there, but sometimes like to see what lies on the other side of the road, and so they take to the air to fly over traffic, wending their way through the web of power lines that hang high above. It was here that I saw a whimsical, magical sight. Just east of the bait shop, a pelican was preparing to slip between the power lines. I watched as it alternated between flapping its wings to gain height, and tucking them in close for fractions of seconds to lose altitude, before finding the Goldilocks spot where it passed safely through, with electrified wires both above and below. It had threaded the needle, and marvelously so!Want the whole story? Pick up a copy of the Port Isabel-South Padre Press, or subscribe to our E-Edition by clicking here.last_img read more

Social Feed Reading with Shyftr

first_imgTags:#Product Reviews#web Related Posts Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Shyftr, which stands for “Share Your Feeds Together,” is a new online feed reader that combines RSS with a social network that’s built solely around the feeds you read and share with your friends. You can use Shyftr to read your own feeds, read the feeds of other users by viewing their feed list, or search through the content of the Shyftr network to find new feeds that interest you. Will Shyftr be the next big thing for RSS? Or is just another social network?Signing UpWhen you sign up for a Shyftr account, you’re presented with a screen where you can optionally choose to add some of the more popular feeds from various categories to your feed list. There are feeds available in areas like News, Gossip, Technology & Science, Food/Home, Sports, Music, Politics, TV/Film/Entertainment, Humor, Shopping, and strangely, New York, wherein the city itself gets its own category. This made more sense when I realized that the company was founded by Upshot Interactive, a company based in NYC, but it still seems like an odd addition. You can click the checkboxes next to the items or you can click “Skip This” to move on without adding any feeds. Now you’ll be on your profile page where you can customize your profile picture and bio and add feeds to your account. You can add feeds manually, but the ability to import an OPML file isn’t available yet. Another option is to visit the “Popular” tab at the top to find popular feeds. If you read a story on Shyftr and you decide you would like to subscribe to that feed, you use the “Shyft” button to add that feed to your reading list.Shiftr ProfileThe BasicsWhen working with your Feed List, you can view all items, unread items, and can mark items as read, just as you can in Google Reader. Also like Google Reader, you can tag feeds as you read them, however, in Shyftr, your tags are displayed as a tag cloud and not as a long list of items at the bottom of your reader. Your feeds can be organized  into folders, which are called “Feed Sets” in Shyftr, and these will show the number of unread items. next to them.Shyftr Feed ListGetting SocialWhat really makes Shyftr stand out from other feed readers is the social aspect. You can add friends and see what they’re reading and what they’ve “pocketed” (saved). “Pocketed” is sort of like Google Reader’s “Shared items,” but since the whole reading list is shared, calling it “shared” just wouldn’t work. You can easily add your friends feeds to your reader by using the “Shyft” button, just as you can with feeds on the “Popular” page. (“Unshyft” will unsubscribe you.)You and your friends can send individual stories to each other or suggest feeds by using Shyftr’s “suggest” feature, which is accessing by a button at the top of the feed or, for sharing feed content, below the story itself. Like RSSmeme (our coverage), all feeds can be commented on, too.SearchUsing Shyftr’s search function, you can find new feeds, friends, or content. You just enter in your search term, then click “Content,” “Feeds,” or “Members,” depending on what you’re looking for. Shyftr also introduces “Guides,” which are “virtual friends,” and not actual people, who can help you find feeds of interest. For example, there is a Guide for Apple, a Guide for Movies, a Guide for CNET, etc. Shyftr Search ResultConclusionFeed reading has been traditionally been a solo activity and until recently, with the advent of “Shared Items” and RSS aggregators, did RSS finally venture into the social space. If Shyftr adds critical features, like the ability to import OPML for starters, then they may have a jump on the next big trend for RSS – social RSS. That is, unless people’s social networking burnout has everyone taking a breather from joining more social networks. Although you can add “friends” in Shyftr, they might not be the same kind of friends as you have in Google Reader. In Google Reader, your friends are really your friends – they are people that you email with, something that implies a tighter connection than what you have with “online buddies.” Still, I can see where it would be the social aspect of Shyftr could allow it to be an excellent resource for finding new sources of information. Just imagine if you could poke into the feed list of your favorite bloggers! (Something that ShareYourOPML allowed, before going offline). So I can see where Shyftr has potential if enough people join. So if you join, add Louis Gray as your friend, who introduced me to this service via his blog post – something you would have known if you could see my RSS! sarah perezcenter_img Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketlast_img read more

Australia secures a clean sweep!

first_img@Eden_RichardsAfter taking home the Mixed Open division with a 3-0 whitewash earlier in the day, Australia has made it a clean sweep, winning both the Men’s Open and Women’s Open divisions with unbeaten 3-0 records to take home the Trans Tasman Series. The nine wins to zero victory ensures back-to-back clean sweeps by Australia after the Aussies gave the Kiwis the same treatment in 2016.Australia were absolutely dominant over the past three days, with no team more impressive than the Aussie Women’s Open side. The Australian Women put together a combined scoreline of 33-12 over their three games, dismantling New Zealand from the get-go.They put the exclamation mark on their 2017 campaign on Sunday, running out 14-3 winners in a one-sided clash.A scoreless first half cost New Zealand dearly, with the Kiwis not turning up to play against an opponent in hot form.It meant Australia led 6-0 at half-time before scoring eight touchdowns to three in the second half to run away with the win.Two tries to Laura Peattie, Patricia Michaelopolous, Marikki Watego and Samantha Rodgers helped the Aussies seal victory, while New Zealand’s Jazmin Hotham, Jessica Maher and Maisie Evison were the only touchdown scorers for the Kiwis. The New Zealand Women’s Open side is in somewhat of a rebuilding stage and should be applauded for the effort and heart they showed in all three games.Australia simply had too much class across the field and it bodes well heading into the 2019 World Cup.Not be outdone, the Australia Men’s side also capped off an unbeaten series to win 7-6 in Game Three on Sunday. It was the second one-touchdown win for the Aussies over the campaign, with Australia winning in a drop-off during Game Two on Saturday.New Zealand were desperately unlucky not to come away with at least one win throughout their three games in the Men’s division, but the Australian’s composure under immense pressure proved the difference.Nothing showed that more than Sunday’s tight victory.Tied at 4-4 at half-time, Australia knew what they had to do to secure victory and they did so, outscoring New Zealand 3-2 in the second half to hang on to the win.A double to Cody Green set the platform for the Aussies who showed the poise and experience you would expect from the world’s best touch football team.Men’s Open coach Tony Trad spoke after the match, commending New Zealand for their effort.”It was a gutsy win just like Saturday. It was an example of hard Test match football and I think the game was there for the taking right up until the last touchdown. We managed to hold on,” Trad said.”It’s what you’d expect from an Australia vs New Zealand Test match in any sport, let alone touch football”Full credit to the New Zealand team. They are a very young side. They kept coming back. We worked very hard for it and are happy to come away with the Trans Tasman Series.”New Zealand can hold their heads high, with a number of individuals unlucky to be on a losing side.Josh Quinn and Reihana Soutar-Finch both scored doubles in the heartbreaking loss, giving the two some positives to finish the campaign.  Results wise there was not much joy for the Kiwis over the weekend, but they will be sure to take a lot from the experience, both on and off the field. It was a wonderful weekend of touch football at Sunshine Coast Stadium and one all of the Australian touch football family will remember fondly after a brilliant display.Women’s OpenAustralia 14 (Watego 2, Peattie 2, Rodgers 2, Michaelopolous 2, McCall, Sargent, Maddick, R. Davis, Upton, Crowe touchdowns) defeated New Zealand 3 (Hotham, Mahar, Evison touchdowns)Men’s OpenAustralia 7 (Green 2, Hoch, Prowse, Good, Norman, Francis touchdowns) defeated New Zealand (Soutar-Finch 2, Quinn 2, Robinson, Graham touchdowns)Related LinksAussie Victorylast_img read more

La Liga president would bet 10000 that the US match will

first_imgThe Spanish league wants to play one official game in the United States for the next 15 years but is seeing a lot of obstaclesAfter it was announced that one official Spanish La Liga match would be played every year in the United States for the next 15 years, many were against the idea. From coaches to players, to even the Gianni Infantino president of FIFA, it seems like this project has many detractors. But for La Liga president Javier Tebas, the match is a sure thing, so sure he is willing to bet $10,000 that the idea will go ahead.“I would bet $10,000 that the game will take place,” he told CNN Sport.David Villa, SpainQuiz: How much do you know about David Villa? Boro Tanchev – September 14, 2019 Time to test your knowledge about Spanish legendary forward David Villa.“I know both Spain and the sports world and therefore I knew it would not be easy and that there would be unrest.”According to Tebas, Barcelona and Girona will be the first two clubs to play an official La Liga match in the United States.“It is an industry that is resistant to change, so other things we have done have also been hard. It’s almost sure that we are going to play in Miami,” said Tebas.“As I’ve said before, I know my country well and its sporting institutions and therefore we knew that this unrest was going to take place.”“I am not surprised by it. We have a strategy, we have a plan and we are going to keep working with the goal of being in Miami on January 26 at the Hard Rock Stadium,” he added.last_img read more
