NSWMA Receives much Help for Clean-Up Project

first_imgFacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmail The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) has received some $85 million and equipment for the National Hurricane Clean-Up Project this weekend.In an interview with JIS News, Acting Executive Director, Christopher Powell said that the NSWMA has “looked at all the possible scenarios and how we are going to address them. we have done the best we can do and we are pretty ready for the weekend.”Areas of major focus include the south coast, inner cities in Kingston, Old Harbour Bay, East Portland and South Portland. According to the NSWMA, these areas are most prone to health hazards.Meanwhile, the National Works Agency (NWA) has committed 90 pieces of equipment for the exercise. These include 12 front end loaders, 42 trucks, 35 backhoes and one grader. Bouyges Construction Company has contributed 14 trucks and five backhoes. Old Harbour Bay and South Clarendon will receive two and three of the backhoes, respectively and seven trucks each.According to the NSWMA, the requirements were determined as follows:South Clarendon – 15 trucks, 1 front end loader 1 backhoe, 3 power saws.Old Harbour Bay- 20 trucks, 2 front end loaders, 1 backhoeKingston – 60 trucks, 2 front end loaders, 6 backhoes, 6 power sawsEast Portland – 15 trucks, 3 front end loaders, 3 backhoesPetroleum companies have committed vouchers totalling $1.5 million for fuel and each trucker will receive 75 litres of fuel.“I am appealing to all Jamaicans to come out in their numbers and clean up their respective areas and to assist the solid waste agency and all the state agencies in cleaning up Jamaica,” Mr. Powell urged.The NSWMA is also getting assistance from Metropolitan Parks and Markets (MPM), North Eastern Parks and Markets (NEPM), Western Parks and Markets (WPM) and Southern Parks and Markets (SPM).
